Financial planning for doctors and dentists

# Financial advice for doctors & dentists

A strong income brings choices, but not always clarity. Should you repay the home loan, invest, contribute more to super, protect your family or prepare to work fewer hours? We help you weigh those decisions together, with tax and cashflow considered from the start.

[Discuss your financial priorities](https://meetings.hubspot.com/verityadvisory/15-min-phone-call)[Take the Doctor Financial Scorecard](https://doctor-financial-scorecard.scoreapp.com/)

Personal financial advice is provided under the authorisations explained in our Financial Services Guide.

## Earning more can make financial decisions harder

Many doctors have more options than time to consider them. The difficulty is often deciding what to do first—and which apparently sensible decisions could work against one another.

- You have surplus income but aren't sure whether to reduce your home loan, invest or contribute more to super.
- Your investments and super have grown, but you don't know whether they are aligned with your future needs.
- A practice buy-in or a move into contracting could change your personal cashflow and borrowing plans.
- Your family depends on your clinical income and you want to understand the financial impact if work stops.
- You want to reduce clinical hours eventually, without making financial commitments that remove that freedom.
- Tax, lending and investments are being dealt with separately, and you want to understand the combined effect.

Good advice is not a collection of products. It is a sequence of decisions that fits your responsibilities, priorities and financial capacity.

How we think

### Start with the decision, not the product

We begin with what your financial resources need to achieve. Tax affects what you keep; debt affects your flexibility; insurance and investments affect your ability to withstand setbacks and fund future goals. Recommendations are tailored to the agreed scope—not based on an assumption that every client needs a new investment product.

**Tax**What you earn and keep

**Cashflow**What you can commit

**Wealth**What your future needs

Advice for real financial decisions

## What can we help you decide?

Personal advice is scoped around the questions that matter in your circumstances. Some clients need help with one decision; others need a coordinated longer-term plan.

Surplus income, debt and cash reservesUnderstand the trade-offs between repaying non-deductible debt, keeping accessible cash, investing and contributing to super. Tax benefits are considered alongside liquidity and risk.

Investing and building wealthSet an investment approach around your objectives, time horizon, capacity for loss and need for accessible funds. Consider diversification, ownership and the ongoing tax consequences.

Superannuation and SMSF choicesReview contributions, existing funds, investment options, fees, retirement strategy and whether an SMSF is appropriate—or whether simpler arrangements better meet your needs.

Income protection and family securityAssess the financial impact of illness, injury or death, then consider appropriate life, TPD and income protection insurance against existing resources, debt and dependants.

Working less and retirement planningExplore when and how clinical hours might reduce, what spending the plan needs to fund, how super and other assets may be used, and what could upset those assumptions.

Estate and succession coordinationConsider super nominations, insurance ownership, investment structures and practice interests, coordinating with your solicitor for wills, powers of attorney and other legal documents.

Financial product advice is provided within the applicable authorisations. Tax services, credit assistance and legal services have separate requirements and arrangements.

Tax-led, coordinated where needed

## Your financial plan doesn't sit apart from your tax and practice decisions

Verity's accounting and tax expertise helps us recognise the implications of other financial choices. Different regulated services are provided under their respective engagements and authorisations.

## How financial advice works at Verity

Before paid advice begins, we establish what decision needs to be made, what information is necessary and the agreed scope and fees.

1. Step 1

   Understand your priorities and circumstances

Discuss what matters to you, your income and spending, family responsibilities, debt, existing super, investments, insurance and the choices ahead.
2. Step 2

   Compare practical options

Analyse suitable strategies and their trade-offs, including tax considerations, costs, liquidity, risk and alternative uses of money. Document personal advice where required.
3. Step 3

   Implement and review where agreed

Explain recommendations and associated costs, help with agreed implementation and review your plan under any separately agreed ongoing service arrangement.

Our approach

## Financial decisions should serve your life—not the other way around

We favour understandable strategies and disciplined choices over unnecessary complexity or chasing short-term outcomes.

Purpose before productsWe start with your responsibilities, aspirations and the freedom you want your money to support. A product recommendation should have a clear role in meeting those objectives.

Tax-aware, not tax-drivenTax matters, but so do access to cash, concentration, costs and long-term flexibility. A strategy that improves one measure can worsen another.

Risk you can live withMarket volatility matters, but so does the possibility of failing to meet your goals. We consider your capacity to absorb loss, time horizon, diversification and the risks of taking too little or too much investment risk.

## Common questions about financial advice

When should a doctor seek financial advice?

Useful points include taking on significant debt, investing surplus income, changing work arrangements, starting a family, reviewing insurance, buying into a practice or preparing to work less. You can seek advice about one decision without committing to an ongoing arrangement.

Should I pay down my home loan or invest?

That depends on your loan rate, cash reserve, tax position, investment horizon, risk tolerance and need for flexibility. Reducing non-deductible home-loan interest can be attractive, but the best decision requires comparing the full consequences of each option—not assuming borrowing to invest is always preferable.

Can you advise me about super and whether to establish an SMSF?

We can assess superannuation options and whether an SMSF may suit your circumstances within the applicable authorisations and agreed advice scope. Establishing an SMSF is not a default recommendation; costs, trustee obligations, investment choices and alternatives matter.

Will I need to change my existing investments or super?

Not necessarily. Advice may support retaining existing arrangements, making a limited change or taking no immediate action. Any recommended changes should have an identifiable purpose and be evaluated against costs and potential consequences.

How do financial advice and tax advice work together?

The decisions interact, but the services are provided under their respective regulatory and engagement arrangements. Verity can consider tax consequences when developing an appropriate financial strategy and separately scope any tax agent work that is required.

How are financial advice fees and commissions disclosed?

We explain the proposed advice scope and fees before engagement and provide relevant disclosure documents. Advice Practice Alliance's Financial Services Guide describes the services, remuneration and relationships that may influence the advice. The licensee receives commissions on certain life insurance products, and the financial advice service is not described as independent.

See our [Disclosures page and Financial Services Guide](https://www.verityadvisory.com.au/disclosures/?hsLang=en-au).

Do I need ongoing financial advice?

Not everyone does. A one-off engagement may be appropriate for a defined decision. Ongoing advice may suit changing or more complex circumstances, with the services, fee and review arrangements agreed separately.

Do you prepare wills or other legal documents?

No. We can help identify financial and superannuation matters to discuss with your solicitor, but wills, powers of attorney and other legal documents require legal advice and drafting.

## Not sure which financial decision needs attention first?

The Doctor Financial Scorecard is a useful starting point if you're exploring your position. If you already have a decision to make, such as a practice buy-in or upcoming borrowing, you can book a conversation directly.

## What financial decision is on your mind?

Maybe you're deciding what to do with surplus income, thinking about working fewer clinical hours or wanting to protect the financial security of your family. Tell us what you're trying to achieve and what's uncertain.

We can discuss whether personal financial advice is appropriate, how the engagement would be scoped and what it may cost before any paid work begins.
