Tax Advice for Doctors in Brisbane

Know where you stand, and what to do next.

As your income grows, you move into contracting or private practice, or you consider buying into a practice, the way you earn and hold income may need to change.

Verity Advisory helps Brisbane doctors and practice owners with tax planning, contractor arrangements, structure reviews and compliance, while considering the effect on cashflow, borrowing and future plans.

Each career stage brings different tax questions

You may have started as a PAYG employee with tax withheld for you. Each move after that changes what you need to manage, and the answer isn't always a new entity. Sometimes the most useful advice is knowing what to leave alone.

  1. Employed

Tax withheld through payroll. Salary packaging, deductions and a first investment.

  2. Contracting or locum

An ABN, GST registration where required, personal services income rules, PAYG instalments and record keeping.

  3. Higher income

Investments, larger borrowing and whether your current arrangements still suit you.

  4. Practice ownership

Buy-in structure, how income and distributions flow, practitioner arrangements, payroll tax and financing.

  5. Growth or exit

Expansion, sale, capital gains and any small business concessions you may be eligible for.

Should doctors earning over $200,000 use a company or trust?

Not necessarily.

If most of your income comes from your own clinical work, it is likely to be personal services income. Where the personal services income rules apply, income earned through a company, partnership or trust is attributed back to you, so the structure doesn't change how that income is taxed. Other integrity rules can apply as well.

A structure can still make sense for running a practice business, holding investments or family circumstances. That's a separate question from how your clinical income is taxed, and it's worth answering before you set one up.

A structure that reduces tax may not give the best overall result. It can change how lenders assess your income, how easily you can access funds, what administration costs and how much flexibility you have later. Verity coordinates tax advice with lending and financial planning, each provided separately and under its own licensing arrangements.

Borrowing

Lenders may assess income differently depending on how you're paid, your structure and your financial statements. Tax and lending plans should be considered together.

Frequently asked questions

When should a doctor review their tax arrangements?

Useful points are moving into contracting, starting private practice, a significant change in income, buying investments, considering practice ownership or preparing for major borrowing.

Can tax planning affect my borrowing capacity?

Yes. Lenders may assess income differently depending on your employment arrangements, structure, financial statements and tax returns. If significant borrowing is planned, tax and lending should be considered together.

Are contractor arrangements always more tax-effective?

Not always. Contracting changes how you're paid, what you can claim and what you must manage yourself, such as GST registration where required, PAYG instalments and your own super. Whether it leaves you better off depends on the terms of the arrangement, not the label.

What should be reviewed before buying into a medical practice?

The proposed ownership structure, expected income and distributions, financing, tax liabilities, capital gains implications and how you would exit. These are best addressed before you sign anything binding.

Do you prepare tax returns as well as give advice?

Yes. We prepare individual, company and trust tax returns, and use them as a starting point for a review when circumstances have changed.

Make your next decision with more clarity

If your income arrangements have changed, your business interests are growing or a big decision is coming up, it may be time to check whether your tax arrangements still suit you.
